Crossing Wilcox at Selma – 32-Second Kinematic Pinhole Exposure – Hollywood, California – 2010

ANATOMY OF A KINEMATIC EXPOSURE

Kinematic™ pinhole photographs are long, handheld exposures captured through a pinhole-sized aperture while moving about with the camera. These dreamlike abstractions are recordings of both time and space that speak to the vibrant experience of urban nightlife.

This exposure begins with me steadying the camera against a lamp post to create the defined letters on the right. When the traffic light changes, I stroll across the street, producing the cloud of text on the left. The resulting image is single frame, cinematic record of the 32-second journey.

There's a place off the drag
Called the Gilbert Hotel
And there's a couple letters
Burned out in the sign
...

Now the night clerk, he got a club foot
He's heard every hard luck story
At least a hundred times or more
He says, check out time is 10:00 a.m.

And that's just what he means
Go on up the stairs
With your sweet little wishes
Your pretty blue dreams

–Tom Waits
