Rain on Windshield – North of Osdick, California – 2010

Rain comes infrequently to the Mojave Desert, but storm clouds had been hanging around, dark and low, for most of the afternoon. A few precious drops fell just as the sun made a dramatic appearance before dipping behind the distant mountains.

The droplets are transformed by the optics of an eight-blade lens diaphragm into the octagonal shapes that play across the foreground of this image. Simple, in-camera effects are integral to my practice, illustrating the everyday magical realism embodied by the photographic medium.
