LINES OF FIRE 🔥
Last fall, I enjoyed a 5-week residency at Art 1307 in the beautiful city of Naples. A year later, I return to exhibit work in Occhi sulla Città, curated by Cynthia Penna at the Museo della Moda Napoli. The show opens this Saturday, Nov 8, 11h-16h, featuring work from two new series: Circumvesuviana, made along the eponymous railroad circumnavigating Vesuvius; and Bagnoli, home to an infamous, seaside industrial site, long-closed to the public due its a toxic legacy (thru Dec 31).

The group show includes ten, U.S.-based photographers showing work from previous Art 1307 residencies. I used my time in Italy to continue color infrared explorations, and to develop new production and installation ideas. For instance, the multispectral image below was finished by applying flames directly to the actual print, a process I’ve never before seen employed in a figurative manner. 🔥

Likewise, I created hand-cut leaves from work prints, connecting the photographs exhibited above to the way infrared photography is primarily used today. The process’ ability to vividly illuminate living foliage makes it ideal for forest and crop surveys, revealing plant health details otherwise imperceptible to human sight.

Installation study for Occhi sulla Città
Presented together as Lines of Fire, the two series relate both aesthetically, and because the camera, the locomotive, and the blast furnace – all invented during the industrial revolution – profoundly transformed our relationship to time and space. See writer/curator Tyler Stalling’s concise and insightful essay on the work HERE.
Postcards available at the exhibition, Paris Photo, and upon my return to the U.S.
