FLIRTING WITH DISASTER

Curve at Horizon – Infrared Exposure – Garlock, California – 2012

The road is a central feature of my remote travels, both in terms of how I see the desert and how roads shape the physical existence of today’s desert communities. I may or may not have been driving at elevated speeds while capturing these images, but the somewhat unpredictable results of not looking though a viewfinder are an appealing counterpoint to the controlled compositions I create from a tripod. Essential to these infrared exposures are the longer shutter speeds that blur foreground elements, conveying a sense of forward movement that draws the viewer into the frame.
